Supervised Practice Hours: Increase in Minimum Number of Years of Experience of Supervisor
One of the criteria set by the Social Work Accreditation and Advisory Board for accreditation as or conversion to a Registered Social Worker (RSW) is that a social worker must have at least 1,000 hours of supervised practice. The hours may consist of field placement hours at the rate of one placement for 400 hours and/or supervised practice hours obtained during employment from a supervisor who has a recognised degree or graduate diploma in social work and at least 3 years of social work experience.
The Board has received feedback from senior social workers that having 3 years of social work experience is insufficient in ensuring that a supervisor is able to provide quality supervision to younger social workers. In view of this, the Board has decided that the minimum number of years of experience for the supervisor will be raised from 3 years to 4 years with effect from 8 February 2018, thereby giving 1-year notice.
This means that the Board will continue to accredit applicants who have obtained the necessary supervised practice hours from a social work trained supervisor with at least 3 years but less than 4 years of social work experience from now till 7 February 2018. After this date, only applicants who have received supervised practice hours during employment from a social work trained supervisor with at least 4 years of social work experience will be considered for accreditation as or conversion to RSWs. The new criterion will apply to both supervision provided by a supervisor within the organisation or externally. All the other conditions remain unchanged.
Hence, for RSW-Ps and RSSPs who are planning to apply for conversion to a Registered Social Worker (RSW) on or after 8 February 2018, you will have to fulfil this new criterion. For RSWs who plan to supervise younger social workers to enable them to qualify for accreditation as or conversion to RSWs, please note that you will have to have at least 4 years of social work experience in order for your supervisee to be accredited as a RSW on or after 8 February 2018. For all accredited professionals who will be submitting supervision hours received from a social work trained supervisor as CPE credits for the renewal of the accreditation status on or after 8 February 2018, please note that your supervisor must have at least 4 years of social work experience at that time.

New Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Requirements
In view of the comments and suggestions that we have received during our Feedback Sessions on Accreditation at about 140 organisations and considering both local and overseas practices, the Social Work Accreditation and Advisory Board (SWAAB) has reviewed the CPE Framework and decided to reduce the number of CPE credits required for the renewal of accreditation status.
The new CPE requirements, which will take immediate effect, are as follows:
1. The total number of CPE credits required for renewal will be reduced from 160 credits to 60 credits for two years;
2. The minimum number of credits that must be obtained from the Structured Activities will be reduced from 60 to 30; and
3. The maximum quota of credits that has been set for some categories of the Unstructured Activities will be removed entirely.
All other requirements remain the same. Click here for the new CPE Credits Matrix. Please note that the online system has been adjusted to cater to the new requirements and the procedures for online submission of credits remain unchanged.
